The “zombie apocalypse” scenario is brought up quite often on gun forums all the time, the question of what gun to use if the undead rise up has been discussed countless times. What would I use during a zombie apocalypse? I’ll save that for a later post.
Whenever I watch AMC’s hit show The Walking Dead the gun enthusiast in me always pays close attention to the guns and weapons used, who am I kidding, I actually do this with all movies and TV shows I watch. What makes the weapon choices in The Walking Dead so interesting is that no one is using a tacticool assault rifle or is dual wielding pistols. They’re not sporting anything too fancy. Even the main character Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), a sheriff’s deputy, is using a wheelgun. We wrote about the weapons used in The Walking Dead a while back, specifically about the prop and stunt weapons used on set. Below is a collection of the guns used by the characters of the TV show The Walking Dead.
Colt Python .357 Magnum
Deputy Rick Grimes carries a six-inch Colt Python chambered in .357 Magnum as his duty sidearm, and after he wakes up in the hell that is the world in The Walking Dead his trusty Python remains his handgun of choice. We first see Rick use his Python to kill a little girl walker in the opening scenes of the pilot episode.

Mossberg 590 12 Gauge Shotgun
After Rick’s Python, one of the most used guns in The Walking Dead is the Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotgun used by Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal), also a sheriff’s deputy. The Mossberg 590 is a variant of the classic Mossberg 500 series of shotguns used by the military and many police agencies around the country. We see Shane using his 590 in the pilot episode while on duty as a deputy and throughout the series to put down walkers.

Ruger M77 Hawkeye Bolt-Action Rifle
Dale Horvath (Jeffrey Demunn) is one of the most level headed, wise and experienced members of the group. Dale is usually on watch atop his Winnebago with his trusty Ruger M77 Hawkeye bolt-action rifle slung on his shoulder, he’s rarely ever seen without it. Andrea uses Dale’s M77 when she mistakenly shoots Daryl thinking he is a walker while she was on watch.

Glock 17
One of the most used handguns in the series, the popular Glock 17 handgun is used throughout both season one and two of The Walking Dead. Shane uses one as his duty gun, with other members or the group using it in various instances to kill walkers.

Mossberg 500 12 Gauge Shotgun
Along with the Mossberg 590 used by Shane, the group also uses a Mossberg 500 pump-action shotgun. We see Glenn (Steven Yeun) use it to defend the camp in season one and kill the walkers in the barn on Hershel’s farm in season two. Rick also uses the Mossberg 500 when they run into the “Vatos” in season one.

Smith & Wesson 3913 Ladysmith
Used by Andrea (Lauri Holden), her S&W 3913 “Ladysmith” was a gift from her father. When we see Andrea first draw her S&W in the second episode of the first season, she pulls it on Rick and it’s pretty obvious she doesn’t know how to use it as she keeps the safety on. Later in season two she expands her firearms knowledge as she becomes a more experiened walker killer under Shane’s tutelage.

Beretta 92FS
We first see the Beretta 92FS when Rick takes refuge in a tank as he runs into a horde of walkers in Atlanta. He pulls it off what he thinks is a dead American soldier, who turns out to be walker. Andrea also uses the Beretta 92FS in season two when her and Shane are jumped by walkers as they search for Sophia in a group of track homes. We also see various American soldiers using the Beretta 92 in a few flashback scenes.

Remington 870 12 Gauge Shotgun
Along with the Mossberg 590 and 500 shotgun, the group also has a Remington 870 Wingmaster pump-action shotgun. A variant of the Remington 870 line of shotguns, we see Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) use it a few times in both season one and two. T-Dog (IronE Singleton) and Glenn also use a Remington 870 shotgun with a synthetic stock from Rick’s bag of guns that he gathered at his police station in season one.

Horton Scout HD 125 Crossbow
While it’s not a gun, any Walking Dead weapon list would not be complete without mentioning Daryl’s crossbow. His Horton Scout HD 125 Crossbow allows him to hunt game and walkers silently as to not attract the attention of other walkers. It’s actually available on Amazon.com for purchase with a red dot scope already attached.

Stryker Strykezone 380 Crossbow
Daryl’s new crossbow from season three the Stryker Strykezone 380 Crossbow, it was found by Rick and Michonne in Morgan’s weapons cache. It features a 160lb draw weight with 123 ft/lbs of energy at 380 FPS. Just like with Daryl’s older Horton, the Strykezone crossbow is also available on Amazon for all the Daryl Dixon fans out there.

Other Notable Appearances
Sig Sauer P226

Browning M2HB Machine Gun

M4A1

Remington 700

Winchester Model 70

Browning Hi-Power

I LOVE this show
The Walking Dead makes me want to get a crossbow, for you know, zombies…
I keep wondering why the keep featuring Amy, Andrea’s sister(first one one the left in the first picture), in so many of the show’s promo pics. Andrea had to use her S&W 3913 Ladysmith in episode five of season one to put her down when she got zombiefied.
It’s a shame to because I liked her character. Well, if they brought Merle back…..
this is the best show on tv
It really is. It’s like watching real life in poetry.
i love this programme my best is rick and his son and i hate shane
The episode “Nebraska”, Lori grabs a revolver before heading into town and has it on the passenger seat. Some kind of .38 special?
I love Shane. Although he is hot-headed and loses his mind a bit, he is still the strongest member of the group, and the best shot. His thinking is rational for that type of situation, in my opinion.
Hey smart one have u seen season 1 ep 6 Rick and Shane r fighting Rick is trying to pull the moss berg from Shane and he got it so I think u know nothing about the show and only watched it once
Watching WD again..did Rick just eject a shell twice?? from his shotgun!? The first time before they went to see G to exchange the prisoner he cocked his shotgun. I’m sure he would have already done that walking around the streets. But maybe not. But for sure, now that it is cocked and loaded, when he tells G that “we are locked and loaded” he cocked his gun to let him know. But by doing that, he ejected the shell. So that’s a wasted shell, I mean, someone else can pick it up. But those vatos probably got a good laugh at seeing the shell ejected! Don’tcha think?
Doesnnt Rick Have a .27o0? Pp
Where can I find the same holster Rick uses for his colt python?
If you look at the picture of Shane sitting at the RV’s table cleaning his Glock 17, look at the magazine. It’s a straight column 10 round, not a staggered column 17 rounder.
thats andrea. last i checked shane doesnt have tits
Thanks for posting this info with pics.
Are there plans to update this? From what I can tell this is mostly season one and a little of two.
Another good place to check is the Internet Movie Firearms Database (www.imfdb.com) It has loads of movies and TV shows and the weapons listed. Very comprehensive.
What about the Beretta m9/92fs rick got off the soldier zombie in the tank in ATL and the pistol Carl basically fed to the zombie that was stuck in the mud near Hershels farm. What was that?
Oops I missed it…whhaatt an IDIOT!!!
I LOVE the show. I love any horror movies, especially if they have zombies. My mother actually got me into the show.
Anybody else hear brass hit the floor after Andrea shot herself? That was a Python right??? Hmmmmmm
Overall, the weapons advisor on this show does a great job. The weapons used are the kind that would be readily available here in the South, especially all of those hunting rifles, shotguns and popular handguns like the Python and Glocks.
I think it’s interesting that the only “exotic” gun I have seen is the Governor’s bull pup.
Andrea has a real problem with the safety on a gun. When she pulled her S&W Ladysmith on Rick, the thumb safety was on. Tonight, when she asked for Rick’s gun to kill herself, she said “I know how the safety works”. Colt Pythons don’t have a safety. Then the sound effects guys blew it when she shot herself and we heard a shell casing hit the concrete floor. Yeah, great sound effect, but come on man
I think it suits the Governor that he carries a nickel Beretta 92 and that Steyr AUG. Fancy guns for a fancy man to set himself apart as special.
I really like The walking Dead my daughter and I are both big fans . The show has a great feel to it, you get sucked in and can’t get out, as if you would want to . I own a Colt King Cobra myself with an 8 inch barrell it’s a fine gun and a little more rugged than the Python .Although if I was in the fix Rick and the rest are in I think I would want my Ruger 10/22 with a 100 round barell clip with me too a lot of fire power and very little weight . Anyway it’s a well done show fun to watch
i just started wathcing this show and am addicted
I would love to see a .45 xd i cant this show!!!”
Dale’s rifle is a Rem. 700……Not a Ruger M77.
In the third pic, where Rick is sighting down it, you can see the Remington style bolt knob and Remington two position safety. In other pics you can see the “Remington” roll mark on the left side of the receiver, and the two-piece bolt-on scope bases.
what about rick’s ar15 ?
The soldiers use the M9, not 92FS. Very slight distinction, yet any service member who carried the M9 would agree that distinction should be made
