With modern machines and technology producing a rifled barrel isn’t that difficult, but how did they make rifled barrels in the 1800s? This animation below shows how the 1853 Robbins & Lawrence machine cut the rifling in gun barrels. It’s actually a pretty interesting and intricate design.

I have watched someone rifling a barrel by hand using a wooden jig. It was for a black powder rifle and used the octagon barrel to index each cut. The jig was at Dixon’s gun makers fair in PA.
